Maintenance

How often does the cell need to be cleaned?

It varies depending on the water in use.  Hard water and alkalinity, as well as their ratios, are the main factors. High levels or poor ratios lead to more frequent cleaning.  The average is about twice a year.

Hard Water

Pool water has a tendency to become "hard" (high levels of minerals and chemicals) over time due to evaporation. When water is added, new chemicals and minerals are added as well.  Eventually the resulting high levels of minerals (and/or any existing high levels from extreme harsh chemical treatments) can make the water difficult to maintain.  This is true regardless of the purification method.

How do you know maintenance is needed?

Maintenance is indicated when the power pack red LED lights up.  Occasional visual inspection through the clear cell housing also works.  A white scaly build up means the unit needs cleaning.
